Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is a member of the mint family and our signature plant here at Suburban Herbalism+. Lemon’s balm strength is at least three fold:
- it’s scent has shown to affect our “primitive” brain-the limbic system-in a way that decreases anxiety
- by virtue of its mint family characteristics, it has antispasmodic/anti-cramping properties,
- it has shown itself to be effective in the resolution of the herpes family of viruses both as a topical as well as an internal medicine for herpes, shingles, and chicken pox. It combines well with St. John’swort for this activity. Here’s a link for herpes study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24817544
Lemon balm is great for anxiety that is felt in the gut with gas, bloating, spasm or IBS type symptoms. The mental emotional picture is the person who is tied up in knots, feeling alone, overwhelmed, isolated, and afraid.
